Friday's college roundup: Top-ranked CNU starts women's volleyball season with two victories

In field hockey Friday, No. 3 Old Dominion used goals in the first half by Sarah Breen and Kimberly Oakes to win 2-1 at No. 1 Maryland.

Men's soccer:

Freshman Mark Brewington and sophomore Jalon Brown each scored equalizing goals for the Captains, as 13th-ranked Division III team Christopher Newport gained a 2-2 home draw against top-ranked and defending national champion Ohio Wesleyan.

The Joe Pombriant/CNU Classic will continue Saturday and Sunday, though the Captains don't play Saturday.

Women's soccer:

Host Radford beat Old Dominion 3-1, overcoming the Monarchs' halftime lead with three goals in the second half -- beginning with a penalty kick in the 58th minute.

ODU scored first in the 33rd minute on a shot from 25 yards from junior Nikki Clarke.

Women's volleyball:

In its first matches as the nation?s No. 1 Division III team, Christopher Newport won twice to start the Captains Classic at Freeman Center.

CNU, coming off its NCAA tournament runner-up finish of a year ago, beat Bridgewater 25-11, 25-16, 25-21 behind Cory Harris? 12 kills, then overcame Eastern (Pa.) 25-22, 25-17, 25-14.

In the Tribe Invitational at Kaplan Arena, Shaylin O'Connell had 11 kills and eight blocks as William and Mary beat Manhattan 25-22, 25-23, 23-25, 25-22. Paulette Grand Pre added 11 kills and 19 digs.
